How To Put Coconut Oil In Your Hair To Stop It From Going Gray, Thinning Or Falling Out

Indian Subcontinent, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia, Burma, Philippines and some parts of the Caribbean are places where coconuts grow in abundance. Coconut oil has many beneficial, functions, what makes it so special, and that is a reason why millions of people are choosing to use it. The Coconut oil is rich in carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals which are good for the human body. Coconut oil is one of the best natural remedies for premature graying of hair, but also makes your skin soft, healthy and radiant. The fatty acid in the oil binds the protein in hair, and also cares for the roots and strands of hair. Lauric acid in coconut oil improves hair health.

Also is used as hair oil for thousands of years, and has shown remarkable results so far. This oil keeps the hair strong, nourished and protected from the effects of premature aging, like baldness and excessive hair loss. In this article you will find out which are the best benefits of Coconut oil.

Benefits of Coconut Oil for Hair

Anti-Dandruff:

People have used coconut oil for skinfor hundreds of years to fight dandruff. This unsightly, and often itchy, condition can be caused by dry skin conditions, sensitivity to the harsh chemicals in hair care products, and commonly yeast-like fungal (Malassezia) infections.(3)

Coconut oil’s medium-chain fatty acids including lauric acid and capric acid, have strong antiviral, antimicrobial and antifungal properties that target the fungus and help to kill it as well as viruses and bacteria that may be lurking on your scalp.

Many prescription and over-the-counter dandruff shampoos can actually make dandruff worse, and don’t fix the root cause of the flakiness. If the problem is fungal, or if the problem is dry skin, topical applications of coconut oil will make a difference. Treating with coconut oil will not make dandruff go away overnight, but many can see results in just a week or so.

Styling:

Perfect your roller set or any other style that takes a minute to look just right with coconut oil. It assists in maintaining moisture and also helps to hold your hair so that you don’t lose your look.

Tip:

Make sure hair is wet before styling and skip the curl-hardening hairspray in favor of a softer, silkier option.

Moisture Retention:

Coconut oil has a high moisture retaining capacity, since it is not easily broken down nor evaporated, being very stable. It does not let moisture escape, thus keeping hair moist and soft, which prevents breakage of hair.

Hair Damage:

Coconut oil rich in lauric acid, has a high affinity for hair protein, and easily penetrates inside the hair shaft, which is due to its low molecular weight. It can be used for pre-wash or post-wash hair grooming. Coconut oil on hair helps to reduce protein loss in both damaged as well as undamaged hair.

Gray Hair and Baldness:

Coconut oil is also beneficial for preventing baldness and gray hair. Try mixing Bhringraj or Eclipta Alba leaf juice into coconut oil and apply this on the scalp and hair.

Boils:

It is important to keep both the hair and scalp clean, and occasional massaging of the hair with a mixture of coconut oil and olive oil may provide relief from the uncomfortable and unsightly problem of boils. However, if the problem persists, it is advisable to contact your health care specialist.

Hair Conditioning:

There’s a reason many conditioners contain coconut oil: It’s better able to penetrate hair (and prevent protein loss) than mineral and sunflower oil, according to research. “I use coconut oil for hair and on my skin for deep conditioning,” says Tasneen Bhatia, MD, an integrative doctor and owner of the Atlanta Center for Holistic and Integrative Medicine. Apply a quarter-size dollop to your hair, comb it, and then pile it into a loose bun. You’ll want to place a soft towel over your pillow or sleep in a shower cap. In the morning, shampoo as usual with a gentle cleanser.

Split Ends:

Olive oil makes an effective home hair treatment for split ends all by itself! All you do is warm enough olive oil to cover your hair, then massage it into those pretty but dry tresses. Wrap your hair in a towel or cover it with a shower cap, and find something to do for half an hour – then shampoo!

Cooling Properties:

The application of coconut oil on the head and scalp also has a cooling effect. It can cool and soothe people with hot heads, or those who suffer from severe scalp sweating.

Hair Loss:

Coconut oil has been used since ancient times in India for grooming hair. Various remedies were prepared using herbs and coconut oil to prevent hair loss. One such remedy can be prepared in modern times by boiling sage leaves in coconut oil. This mixture can be applied to the scalp for the improvement of healthy hair, and its use will also prevent hair loss.

Applying a mixture of lime water and coconut oil can also provide relief from hair loss, as does the mixture of coconut oil and gooseberries. Boil the gooseberries in coconut oil and then apply it on the hair.

Lice Protection:

One of the best uses of coconut oil for hair is in the treatment and prevention of lice! According to a study published in the European Journal of Pediatrics, combination of coconut oil and anise spray is more effective, than the commonly used prescription lice treatment permethrin.

In fact, in the controlled study, the coconut oil based spray was 82% successful and the permethrin was only 42% successful, and 33 of the 50 participants reported scalp irritation when following the conventional treatment.

Another study published in the Israel Medical Association Journal found greater success, although they added ylang ylang oil to the coconut oil and anise oil combination. The treatment was successful in 92.3% of children and caused no serious side effects.

Because coconut oil penetrates the hair shaft, and the scalp, it helps to repel lice and can keep their eggs from attaching to the hair. With the addition of essential oils including ylang ylang, tea tree, and anise, lice don’t have a chance.

Hair Care for Dry Hair:

Using strong hair care products for cleansing, toning and conditioning may lead to a dry and flaky scalp. Coconut oil can be effective in taking care of this sort of dry hair.

Hair Toning:

Just as coconut oil works wonder for your skin, it also gives your hair a silky texture and tons of shine. Simply heat up about 3 to 5 tablespoons of coconut oil in the microwave, then, after it has cooled, apply it to your hair as you would any hair mask. Put on a plastic shower cap or wrap an old T-shirt around your head, and leave the oil in while you sleep. When you wake up, wash your hair and discover your best hair day yet. You can thank me later. Note: Unlike store-bought hair masks, coconut oil is all natural and great for your skin. So, if a little bit happens to rub off onto your pillow while you’re sleeping, you don’t have to worry about dealing with clogged pores or a breakout the next day.

Cooconut oil is widely available in the market. Many people choose an odorless variety, use it for any and all hair conditions, and reap all the benefits of a healthy head of hair!

Coconut Oil in Shampoo

Every shampoo contains different ingredients, some of which might not play well with coconut oil. Unfortunately, finding the right balance and application method that works for your hair will likely require some experimentation. Below is a rough guide that I used to find that perfect shampoo/oil balance that works well for my hair.

Use a simple, gentle shampoo: Many modern shampoos have a lot of chemical ingredients, silicone and so on. Most of them also contain some amount of coconut oil (which is usually processed). When mixing coconut oil with shampoo you should use products that are as basic as possible. This can be a gentle herbal shampoo, a baby shampoo or some other type that has as few ingredients as possible. These shampoos are normally very cheap as well, which is a huge plus!

If your hair gets tangled and just “doesn’t feel right” during/after shampooing chances are that your chosen shampoo just doesn’t work well with coconut oil. Although in some cases coconut oil might simply not be a good fit for your hair, the most common issue is simply not using the right shampoo.

Coconut oil to shampoo ratio: Again, there is no one answer here as everyone’s hair is different and there are countless different shampoo brands out there. Most people start with a one-to-one ratio and adjust from there. I find that for my hair the best mix is about 1 part oil to 4 parts shampoo (so, as you can see, I use very little oil in my mix).

How to apply it: This part is very simple. Mix some oil with your shampoo and apply it to hair roots. Then take some oil/shampoo and apply it to the entire length of your hair. Coconut oil is one of very few oils that can actually penetrate into the hair itself, so make sure that you apply some to all parts of your hair. You can comb the shampoo through your hair using a wide comb to get even better results. Just be very careful not to cause any damage.

There’s no need to leave the shampoo/oil mix on your hair for too long. The general advice is to follow your regular routine just like you would when using a simple shampoo: apply shampoo/oil, wait 30-60 seconds, rinse and then apply a conditioner. Use any simple conditioner, there’s no need to pay for fancy and expensive products/formulas.

Also remember that if you wash your hair daily you should either use very little coconut oil with every wash or use more but only 2-3 times per week.

Healthy Hair: With the various benefits such as hair nourishment, anti-aging properties, moisture retention, and vitamin E supplementation, coconut oil in shampoo is one of the best things to aid in the health of your hair.

The Oily Factor: Detergent or soap-based shampoos leave your hair dry, rough, hard and bleached. That is why you occasionally find that your comb does not go smoothly through your hair after you shampooed it. The oil in shampoo counters this effect. In coconut oil, that component comes from natural saturated fats, and they keep the hair smooth and shiny.

Fragrance: Coconut Oil adds a sweet and refreshing scent to the shampoos as an added bonus.

If you are not regularly using a reliable shampoo that contains coconut oil, you can always mix some coconut oil into your preferred shampoo and enjoy the results. For the best effect, make it an organic or herbal shampoo.

Apart from the uses of coconut oil listed above, it is important to keep hair clean, eat well, use good hair grooming products that have minimal side effects and use a good comb that does not break or damage the hair. Good Luck and Happy, Healthy Hair to Everyone!
