WARNING: Study Reveals That Antibacterial Soap Causes Breast Cancer
Although they are considered a guarantee of safety against pathogens, antibacterial chemicals added to soaps, toothpastes and other personal care product could be harming you. According to a recent South Korean study, triclosan, a popular antibacterial additive, has cancer-promoting effect both in vitro and in vivo, which is very troubling as it can be found in many popular personal care products.
Professor Kyung-Chui Choi and his colleagues from the Chungbuk National University and the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology studied the effects of triclosan on the hormonal system. Triclosan has been shown to disrupt the testosterone hormone in previous studies by mimicking the feminizing estrogen hormone. This throws the endocrine system out of balance and leads to abnormal cell growth resulting in breast cancer in women and formation of malignant tumors. This was shown in both cell samples and live mice trials.
After comparing the frequency and progression patterns of breast cancer growth in both samples, some of which were exposed to triclosan while others were not, it was discovered that the compound spurs abnormal cell proliferation. The worst part is that triclosan bio accumulates in the body over time. “Although the doses of EDCs were somewhat high, we did this to simulate the effects of daily exposure, as well as body accumulation due to long-term exposure, simultaneously in animal experiments. Thus, exposure to EDCs may significantly increase the risk of breast cancer development and adversely affect human health,” professor Choi wrote in the study.
Octylphenol amplifies the cancer-causing effects of triclosan
While researching the effects of triclosan, the team of scientists managed to isolate another antibacterial chemical called octylphenol as a potential cancer-causing compound. Octylphenol actually worked along triclosan to increase the spread and growth of cancer cells. “Research has found that two EDCs — triclosan, an antimicrobial ingredient in many products, including soaps, cosmetics and cutting boards; and octylphenol, which is in some paints, pesticides and plastics — have accumulated in the environment,” ScienceDaily.com reports. “Additionally, triclosan is reportedly in the urine of an estimated 75 percent of Americans.”
Some consumer groups have been raising awareness over the dangers of triclosan for years, highlighting its status as a known hormone-disruptor and pushing for its removal from various products. However, we have yet to see it removed from commercial products. “Studies have increasingly linked triclosan and its chemical cousin triclocarban, to a range of adverse health and environmental effects, from skin irritation, endocrine disruption, bacterial and compounded antibiotic resistance, to the contamination of water and its negative impact on fragile aquatic ecosystems,” explains Beyond Pesticides.
What products contain triclosan?
Due to the pressure from the public, many producers have reformulated their products without triclosan and done so without previous notice. Below you can see a list of some products which contained triclosan before being reformulated. Always check the labels of the personal care products you use, and look for “antibacterial protection” on it. Some soaps contain triclocarban instead of triclosan, which is just as dangerous.
