This is Why You Should NEVER Put Crocs On Your Feet Again
You’ve probably seen Crocs, the oddly shaped popular rubber shoes which became a hit in the early 2000s. Since the last decade, they are so popular that they became an alternative to flip-flops, sandals, indoor footwear and in some cases even to shoes!
Some people are really attracted to their unusual appearance and find them more comfortable to the usual footwear, but several studies have shown that wearing Crocs can have serious consequences on your health.
Crocs and foot health
Since Crocs became so popular among children and adults as well, podiatrists have been consulted on their effect on our health. Their answers were not positive – according to podiatrist Dr. Meagan Leahy, wearing Crocs is not a great alternative for proper footwear. “Unfortunately Crocs are not suitable for all-day use,” she says. “These shoes do not adequately secure the heel. When the heel is unstable, toes tend to grip which can lead to tendinitis, worsening of toe deformities, nail problems, corns and calluses.”
Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common forms of tendinitis and occurs when the plantar fascia, the tendon which connects your heel bone to your toes, becomes inflamed and weakened. This causes pain which can be debilitating. In some cases, plantar fasciitis can result in bone spurs. Bone spur is a calcium buildup on the heel which causes a protrusion of bone to develop on the spot where the tendon connects to the ankle, causing further pain and requiring a surgery to resolve the problem.
Fake Crocs and cancer
A German lab analysis has shown that fake Crocs contain cancerous substances which can be absorbed into the skin. The German broadcasting institution Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR) sent 10 types of plastic cogs to a lab in Germany for analysis, and the tests showed that 6 out of the 10 subjects contained polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, highly cancerous chemicals.
According to a public health document published by the National Toxicology Program, exposure to these chemicals has been related to increased risk of lung, liver and skin cancer. And, although the original Crocs brand of footwear did not contain the chemicals, the tests showed that it still contained substances which can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions.
If you insist on wearing Crocs, at least wear cotton socks to reduce the amount of chemicals entering your skin, and make sure you’re wearing the original brand. We suggest you smell the shoes before buying them – if there’s a strong smell, they are probably releasing dangerous chemicals.
